Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

If you are struggling with plantar fasciitis (pain in the sole of the foot) or Achilles tendon pain and nothing else has helped, take a deep breath and look this way.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, or ESWT, is a new and non-invasive way of introducing shockwaves to the painful area. Much more powerful than an ultrasound machine, it is used to treat chronic, painful tendons (including plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinopathy) and to break up scar tissue. These conditions may often be difficult to treat with conventional physiotherapy.

Nobody will pretend that undergoing ESWT is a pleasant and painless experience - you may require a stiff upper lip and a painkiller - but research suggests that it is worth it, as after only 2-3 sessions, even long-standing cases of severe plantar fasciitis can resolve almost completely, particularly when used alongside other modalities such as stretching, strengthening and the provision of orthotic insoles.

Permanent results can be expected 8-12 weeks after the last session and ESWT has a success rate of around 70%.

Victory’s physiotherapists and podiatrists are all skilled in the use of ESWT - and will also supply tea and sympathy afterwards, should you need it!
