Performance Psychology
“Regardless of how you feel inside, always try to look like a winner. Even if you are behind, a sustained look of control and confidence can give you a mental edge that results in victory.”
- Arthur Ashe
What is performance psychology?
What would you attempt to do if you knew you wouldn’t fail?
Human performance is an extraordinary thing, and it seems as though the biggest barriers to success are often our beliefs about the limits of human performance. One of the most famous examples of this is Roger Bannister. Before he achieved the “miracle” in 1954, it was firmly believed that it was impossible for a human to run a mile in under 4 minutes. But as soon as Bannister did it, he was followed by a host of others, who were able to break the “magic” 4-minute barrier because they knew it could be done.
But it’s not all about breaking records. Victory’s performance psychologists talk to you about mental and psychological issues and barriers that may be affecting your performance in everyday life, work or sports. With you, we will assess these issues to work out what is holding you back, and then help you to increase your performance by better managing your thinking and emotions, or by helping address psychological difficulties that often result from being injured.
Performance psychologists have a variety of skills and strategies to help you to overcome your psychological barriers. These include goal setting, relaxation, visualisation, self-talk, emotional control, concentration, confidence, routines and performance reviews.
