Phil McDougall
“My inspirations are world renowned massage therapist Thomas Myers and physiotherapist and author Gary Gray. The ability to understand how the flexibility of a big toe affects stability of a shoulder, or how compensations from a 15 year old injury evolve into postural imbalances fascinates and drives me. I love to see the positive effects my work has on people’s lives.”
In February 2011 after an action-packed six year career, Philip McDougall left the Royal Marines to pursue his passion for health and fitness. His specialisations in the “beloved Corps” were heavy weapons and combat pistols. He joined the Corps specifically to go to war which was exactly what he got and ended up spending an accumulative total of 14 months on and beyond the front line within Lima Company, 42 Commando. Although he loved his time in the Corps, sometimes indulging in the non-operational delights of unit boxing, cycling and ski racing, he felt he’d ticked all the boxes and couldn’t spend the rest of his life in Never Never Land.
Phil is also a keen amateur triathlete having over fifteen years of competitive experience. His London Triathlon PB is 2 hours 15 minutes, which he hopes to skim another 6 minutes off next year. In earlier years Phil was a national level giant slalom ski racer and represented Sheffield University and Wales. He has a diverse range of careers under his belt from ski instructor to manager of O’Neill’s Irish bar and Reflex nightclub in Bristol.
Before leaving the elite Commandos Phil became a qualified level 2 Fitness Instructor, a level 3 Personal Trainer and a level 4 Functional Therapist. He has since become a successful Personal Trainer and outdoor fitness instructor and continues to feed his hunger for knowledge. While working with Victory, Phil has also qualified as a Level 5 Massage Therapist with the London School of Sports Massage, where his passion really lies; and we're extremely proud to report that he qualified second in his class.
Although still working elsewhere as a personal trainer, Phil will always make himself as available as possible to treat Victory clients - please just ask us! As Myles, one of his very first Victory clients put it, a session with Phil was "the best £30 I have ever spent".
